S.T.O.P. MEMBER GROUPS SHARE FOOD IN
DOWNTOWN ORLANDO ON LABOR DAY

Although disrupted by a torrential downpour, the large group food sharing organized by S.T.O.P., the Stop the Ordinance Partnership, was a success. Orlando Food Not Bombs along with several local churches, shared food with about 75 people at Lake Eola Park. Members of East Orlando Food Not Bombs, Students for a Democratic Society (Central Florida chapter), Orlando CodePink Women for Peace, the Young Communist League (Orlando chapter), and the Central Florida chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union also participated in this event, with the YCL handling clean-up and SDS tabling with literature. The purpose, according to S.T.O.P., was "to point out that–contary to popular perceptions–many homeless people have jobs. However, their hard work doesn't pay them enough to be able to get off the streets. S.T.O.P. believes that all work is valuable and has dignity, and that all workers deserve recognition for their contributions to our community." Despite their proxmity to the park, the groups experienced no real harassment from Orlando police or city officials.

The UCF chapter of Students for a Democratic Society came out to show their support.

The Orlando police showed up for a few minutes. They claimed they had a citizen complaint about the sharing, but because the complaint didn't come from the property owner they couldn't make us move from the sidewalk in front of the restaurant (owned by two proponents of the city's "large group feedings" ordinance).

The women from CodePink brought cookies.

Because of the rain people lined up for food outside of Lake Eola Park's picnic area.

SDS has helped to start East Orlando Food Not Bombs, which regularly shares food on Sundays in the East Colonial area.

In these photos, members of a church group dish up the food they brought, pasta and a nice selection of fruit.
